A Signa Chess Academy guide
Choose one idea to work on
Start with a theme from your latest lesson or game. It might be keeping pieces safe, spotting a tactical pattern, or explaining a middlegame plan. A clear theme makes it easier to notice whether your practice is helping.
Ask your coach for positions that match your current level. A manageable challenge gives you something to think about without turning every session into a guessing exercise.
Solve before you check
When you try a puzzle, look for the opponent’s threats as well as your own opportunities. Choose a candidate move and imagine a reply before checking the answer.
If your answer differs, return to the position and find the idea you missed. Write down one useful observation. Understanding a small number of positions is more helpful than rushing through answers you cannot explain.
Play a game with a purpose
Use a time control that gives you room to practise the theme. Before moving, pause and ask what changed after your opponent’s last move. The aim is to use an idea in a real decision.
Afterwards, choose one moment you found difficult. Think about it yourself before using analysis tools, and bring the position to your coach if you need help.
Keep the routine manageable
Agree a realistic practice rhythm with your coach and family. Some weeks will be busier than others. A short, focused session can still give you something useful to discuss in your next class.
Review the routine as your needs change. Practising should support your interest in the game and the priorities you are working on.
